Positive Economic Reports Send Market Higher This Morning

Wall StreetA better than expected durable goods report and good jobless claims data helped send stocks higher in early trading. Durable goods orders jumped nearly 10% in December, according to the Commerce Department, above the 7.1% rise most economists were expecting.

Weekly jobless claims came in down 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 369,000. This was slightly higher than the 365,000 analysts were expecting. Last week’s figure was revised upward by 4,000. The Labor Department said all states reported data and nothing was unusual about the data. This comes a couple weeks after one large state failed to report their jobless claims numbers, skewing the jobless claims report to the downside for that week. [Read more...]

Stocks Flat as Earnings Season Continues, Stocks to Watch: SVU, PGRX, BTU, GURE, VOLC, ACI

Stocks are trading mostly flat this morning as investors digest more earnings. Caterpillar reported earnings that beat expectations, although revenue fell short. The construction equipment maker also cut its full year guidance. Caterpillar was trading lower in pre market, but has managed to turn positive this morning and is currently up about 1%. Yahoo and Texas Instruments are two companies investors will be watching closely today as they post their earnings after the market close.

In Europe, rumors continue to circulate on when exactly Spain will ask for a bailout. The country’s prime minister clinched election victory in his home region, which many see as a hurdle towards Spain requesting a bailout.

The major stock averages are trading mostly flat this morning with the Dow down 8 points, the Nasdaq up 4 points and the S&P 500 up 1 point. [Read more...]

Stocks Trading Flat This Morning, Stock Gainers: CYMI, SIFY, DF, CNC, URI, HOV

Stocks are trading mostly flat right now after starting the day lower. A better than expected housing starts report pushed stocks higher this morning, but big tech stocks, Intel and IBM, are weighing the market down. Housing starts jumped 15% in September to a seasonally adjusted 872,000 units, the quickest rate since 2008. Economists were expecting an increase to 770,000.

Intel posted quarterly results that beat Street estimates, but its guidance came in soft as consumers shift to tablets. IBM reported a profit that beat expectations, but its revenue came in below estimates.

The Dow is currently trading down 6 points, the Nasdaq is up 4 points and the S&P 500 is up 5 points. [Read more...]

Stronger Dollar Sends Gold Down 1%, Gold Stocks to Watch: ABX, KGC, EGO, AUY, NEM, GFI, GG

A stronger dollar, weak stock market and other commodities all have a hand in sending gold lower today. Gold prices were sitting at 6 month highs following the global coordination to loosen monetary policy earlier this month.
