Stock Futures Red As New Crisis Pops Up. Stocks to Watch: NVDA, ARNA, ECYT, OREX, LEAP, JPM, SNE

Traders at the NYSEIf Europe wasn’t enough of a concern, investors received a nasty surprise yesterday after the closing bell. JPMorgan hastily put together a conference call where they announced as single trader had lost $2 Billion in trades designed to mitigate risk. Dow futures are currently down 75 points. Nasdaq and S&P futures are down 10 and 8 points respectively.

Internationally, Europe still remains a concern as the Greece hurtles towards another election in a few weeks. The recent one has essentially created a hung parliament. Polls out of Greece show the chief anti-bailout party gaining momentum, so this should make for an interesting June to see if they can secure enough seats to form a coalition.

Markets are also having to digest a sharp slowdown in Chinese industrial output. With expectations for a 12.2% rise, the number came in at around 9%. This has many analysts calling for the government to step in decisively to stabilize the weakening manufacturing sector. Retail sales also came in lower than expected. [Read more...]

NYSE Stocks Dipping in Midday Trading: WFR, BPZ, CRM, JNPR, FTK, PCS

Traders at the NYSEMEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (NYSE:WFR) is down 20.62% today at $2.58. WFR has traded 12.6 million shares so far today, double its daily average. MEMC Electronic posted a $92 million first quarter loss this morning sending shares spiraling downward. The company has a market cap of 602.39 million.

BPZ Resources, Inc. (NYSE:BPZ) is down 9.47% in midday trading at $3.06. BPZ has traded 1.1 million shares so far today and trades 1.9 million shares a day on average. 6 Nasdaq Stocks Trading Lower Today: SGI, CDTI, AMAG, CAVM, DGIT, QSII

NasdaqSilicon Graphics International Corp. (NASDAQ:SGI) is down 24.09% today at $6.91. SGI has traded 2.5 million shares so far today, 4 times its daily average. SGI shares are tumbling after reporting fiscal third quarter results. Quarterly results were good with revenue up nearly 40% to $199.4 million and EPS of $0.11 per share. What caused shares to fall was fourth quarter guidance. Silicon is expecting fourth quarter revenue to be in the range of $177 million to $197 million and a net loss of $0.37 to $0.52 a share. Analysts were expecting revenue of $208.9 million and $0.16 a share in profit. The company has a market cap of 222.72 million.

Clean Diesel Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:CDTI) is down 18.64% this morning at $2.88. CDTI has traded 458 thousand shares so far today, well above its daily average of 342 thousand shares. Clean Diesel posted a larger loss than expected in the first quarter causing shares to fall. The company posted a loss of $2.8 million or $0.39 per share. Stock Futures Steady After Six Session Losing Streak. Stocks to Watch: CSCO, AVP, ALU, TSLA, PANL, RENN, CEDC

Stock FuturesAfter a six session losing streak, stock futures are rebounding this morning on jobless claims numbers and the lack of bad headlines out of Europe. Spain’s bond pressure eased a day after they nationalized their fourth-largest lender. The country is expected to unveil a plan today that would requirement banks to shore up their capital reserves to protect against their own housing collapse.

Dow futures are currently up 43 points. Nasdaq and S&P futures are following the index higher, both up 10 and 9 points respectively.

The big economic data point for US markets today is jobless claims. Printing at 367k it is mostly in line with expectations. Last week’s number was revised up to 368k, so that accounts for the 1k drop in claims. The 4 week rolling average dropped 5k to 379k.

In Europe, the markets are stabilizing after a week of turbulent trading. Most analysts think Greece is heading for a fresh round of elections in June, as none of the parties can find enough seats to form a ruling coalition. This puts the next bailout payment in jeopardy as EU countries may be unwilling to continue their support to a country without a functioning national government.

In commodities oil prices are rebounding on the macro data. After slipping below the $00 per barrel mark, Nymex crude futures are up 33 cents to $97.14. [Read more...]

Gross sales jumped nearly 27% in the first quarter to $517.3 million, while net sales jumped 27.5% to $454.6 million. Net income rose 38.3% to $76.1 million versus $55 million a year ago. The company has a market cap of 11.38 billion.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is up 8.12% in after hours trading at $32.50. TSLA cloesd normal trading down 0.43% with 1.7 million shares traded. Tesla announced first quarter results after the close today. Results missed estimates, but shares rose as the company moves the launch of new sedan up. The company has a market cap of 3.14 billion. Stock Futures Sell Off As European Concerns Weigh. Stocks to Watch: DMD, SODA, ARNA, PSTI, DVAX, STEC, SYNC

penny stocksEurope continues to dominate the the psyche of the global investors. The political turmoil in Greece is bringing up the question of whether or not they will leave the Euro and return to the drachma. Dow futures are currently down 89 points. Nasdaq and S&P futures are down 21 and 11 points respectively.

Domestically, the economic data calendar remains light today with just wholesale inventories slated for release at 10am EST. This will leave the US markets susceptible to knee-jerk reactions on any headlines that emerge from Europe.

Most observers think there will be a new round of elections in June as neither side seems to have enough to seats to form a ruling coalition. The leader of the Radical Left has already come out and said that the Greek debt agreement s were null, hence the market reaction over the past few days. It shows the people on the ground are tired of being dictated to by the IMF and ECB.

Greece does have fiscal deadlines approaching on whether or not they continue to receive bailout funds. Without a ruling government, one has to wonder the status of the funds and whether or not Greece can meet their fiscal obligations set forth under the agreements. Doubtful at best.

Commodities are enduring the same sell off that the broader market is. Gold prices lost their grip on $1600 per ounce overnight, while oil continues to fall over concerns over growth. Oil is actually good news for consumers as it will lessen the pain at the pump somewhat.

All in all expect a repeat of yesterday in regards to market action. Unless the headlines out of Europe really start getting surprising. [Read more...]

Wall StreetApollo Global Management, LLC (NYSE:APO) is up 1.64% in after hours trading at $13.05. APO traded 621 thousand shares during regular trading hours as it finished up 5.33% at $12.85. Apollo Global Management announced first quarter results after market close today and beat expectations. The company saw earnings rise 23% in the first quarter. The company has a market cap of 1.62 billion.

Mitek Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:MITK) is up 4.17% this afternoon at $2.75. MITK traded 865 thousand shares during normal trading today as the stock closed down 0.38% at $2.64. MITK shares have dropped more than 50% over the past five days on poor earnings. [Read more...]
