Wall Street signStocks are trading flat today as investors are opting to wait before making any big bets until the Fed and the ECB announce their decisions later this week. There was some positive economic data today as consumer confidence and home prices both saw improvements in July.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) rose above $600 today on reports the company is considering a stock split which would allow the stock to be added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The major stock averages are mixed this afternoon with the Dow down 20 points, the Nasdaq up 4 points and the S&P 500 down 2 points. [Read more...]

The U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $48.7 billion in May according to the Commerce Department. This was in line with expectations. Wholesale inventories went up 0.3% in May and was also in line with expectations.

investment newsBack in black. No, not the AC/DC album. The Dow is back in the black for 2012. The bulls returned to the market this morning after the ECB kept rates unchanged and a hint of further monetary easing in the future by a Fed regional president. After getting pummeled due to lackluster economic data, the market seems to have found at least a temporary bottom and is bouncing off of it. Even Facebook is positive on the day.

The ECB decision to keep rates unchanged shifts the focus back on the EU politicians to come up with a long-term solution. It basically checks to them to solve the issues vs opening up the floodgates of monetary easing. Judging by the lack of will among the EU leaders, this could just be a temporary reprieve for the EU. French President Hollande pushed Euro bonds to which Merkel refused to entertain the idea. With new Greek elections fast approaching, the endgame for Greece in the EU could be right around the corner.

Of course they are doing this without facebook, which is obviously suffering a from a lack of ‘likes’ on the day. Most of the rally is due to the market being technically oversold, but most analysts agree that there needs to be a major catalyst to give the rally legs. Facebook was to provide that, but the over-hyped social network has so far crashed and burned on an epic scale.

The markets are getting a respite from Europe today which is helping the bulls’ cause. The lack of horrible news is seen as good news for the day which is helping the market maintain its gains.
