Stocks Rally on ISM Report, Hot Stocks to Watch: FONR, CRDN, BIOF, MTG, SNTA, AVNR

Stocks are rallying across the board today as data from the manufacturing surprises. Futures were already set to open higher this morning after better than expected factory data in China and the EU. The manufacturing sector in the U.S. expanded for the first time since May as the ISM index rose to 51.5 in September, up from 49.6 in August. An ISM index reading of 50 or more signals expansion.

It wasn’t all good news today though as construction spending fell by the most in a year, down 0.6% in August. The good ISM numbers have overshadowed this news today though as the Dow is up over 1% in late morning trading.

The Dow is currently up 155 points, the Nasdaq is up 21 points and the S&P 500 is up 14 points. [Read more...]

Hot Stocks to Watch: RDN, MW, NAV, IMUC, MTG, AKS

Wall Street signStocks are in the midst of a major rally today thanks to the ECB agreeing to a new bond buying program. Each of the major stock averages are up nearly 2% with the Dow up more than 200 points at midday. At a press conference in Frankfurt, Draghi said the new ECB bond buying program will be a “fully effective backstop.”

Investors were also happy to see a couple of positive economic reports today. According to the Institute of Supply Management (ISM), the service sector posted a 53.7 reading in August. Most economists were expecting a reading of 52.5. Anything above 50 indicates growth in the sector. Private businesses added a touch over 200,000 jobs according to the ADP report. This number is well above economists expectations of 145,000.

A quick look at the markets show the Dow up 239 points, the Nasdaq is up 64 points and the S&P 500 is up 27 points. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks are up in the first half of trading today thanks to better than expected home sales report. Existing home sales saw a 3.4% rise to annual rate of 4.62 million units in April, the highest its been in nearly two years. The positive housing news helped bring markets up after they opened mixed following a Japan credit downgrade.

Stocks are looking weaker towards the close as financial stocks are weighing heavily on the market. We are still in green territory today though thanks to better than expected economic news out of China. A successful Spanish debt auction also kept the markets in the green this afternoon. With about 15 minutes left in the trading day the Dow is up 63 points, the Nasdaq is up 15 points and the S&P is up 4 points.

Here’s some of the more volatile stocks in today’s trading.

Provident Energy Ltd. (NYSE:PVX) is up 21.70% in late afternoon trading at $11.33. PVX is up on heavy volume with 23.6 million shares traded today, more than ten times its daily average. PVX shares are up today after Pembina Pipeline acquired the company in a $3.1 billion deal. The company has a market cap of 3.09 billion.

BroadVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:BVSN) is up 24.13% today at $21.81. BVSN has traded 766 thousand shares today. BroadVision announced earlier today it was selected to provide the social business platform for the Digital London summit. The company has a market cap of 96.62 million.

DARA Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:DARA) is up 19.23% this afternoon at $1.55. DARA has traded 445 thousand shares today, way above its daily average of 37 thousand shares.
