Stocks Flat as Earnings Season Continues, Stocks to Watch: SVU, PGRX, BTU, GURE, VOLC, ACI

Stocks are trading mostly flat this morning as investors digest more earnings. Caterpillar reported earnings that beat expectations, although revenue fell short. The construction equipment maker also cut its full year guidance. Caterpillar was trading lower in pre market, but has managed to turn positive this morning and is currently up about 1%. Yahoo and Texas Instruments are two companies investors will be watching closely today as they post their earnings after the market close.

In Europe, rumors continue to circulate on when exactly Spain will ask for a bailout. The country’s prime minister clinched election victory in his home region, which many see as a hurdle towards Spain requesting a bailout.

The major stock averages are trading mostly flat this morning with the Dow down 8 points, the Nasdaq up 4 points and the S&P 500 up 1 point. [Read more...]

Stillwater MIning Co. (NYSE:SWC) is down 8.17% today at $11.13. SWC has traded 5.07 million shares in midday trading, more than double its daily average. SuperValu Inc. (NYSE:SVU) is up 2.05% in after hours trading at $1.99. SVU closed at $1.95 with more than 9.4 million shares traded, 2 million shares more than its daily average. SVU shares have been trending lower the past few days and have lost $0.35 a share over the past week. The company has a market cap of 416.67 million.

Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) is up 3.88% in after hours at $68.60. YUM traded 5.6 million shares today ahead of earnings. Yum Brands shares are rising in late afternoon trading after its third quarter profit rose 23%, beating estimates and sales from China met expectations. The company has a market cap of 30.10 billion. Stock Futures Maintain Slump After Claims, Stocks to Watch: MRK, SVU, ALU, GNOM, TOT, ORCL

Wall StreetNot even a solid jobless claim report could shake the blues pervading wall street this morning. Jobless claims fell to their lowest level in 4 years last week, 350k, but are expected to tick up next week due to seasonal factors. Futures are down mainly because the FOMC minutes gave little evidence that QE3 is right around the corner.

A quick snapshot of the futures has the Dow down 78, the Nasdaq 18 and the S&P nearly 10.

Asian markets were hammered overnight as investors were more risk averse as it looks like the Fed is waiting for deterioration in the markets to move forward with any additional stimulus. Sign Up For Free Stock Alerts

Commodities were also taking a dive this morning with oil and gold both down. Nymex crude futures are down $1.10 to just over $84 per barrel. Gold futures are off $17 to $1558.70 per ounce. [Read more...]

Wall Street signIf you were expecting a snap back rally you’re going to have to place that want on hold. Wall Street is on edge as it eyes the start of earnings season. Alcoa is first up after the bell. This will give a tell as to whether the recovery is still in an upward trajectory or if it is faltering. Recent data points show that it may be faltering slightly.

Europe is still an ongoing concern as the sell-off in the EU continued into the start of their holiday shortened week. Italian and Spanish bond yields continue to rise, which is fueling the fear that the sovereign debt crisis is not only unresolved, but spreading.

Currently the Dow is down 68, near session lows, the Nasdaq is down 8 and the S&P is off 6. [Read more...]
