Stocks are finishing strong today thanks to reports that Greece could reach a deal with its creditors by the end of the week. This news helped keep the early rally going today. A better than expected housing market sent stocks in the green right out of the gate. At the closing bel the Dow is up nearly 90 points, the Nasdaq is up more than 40 points and the S&P is up 14 points.
Let’s take a look at some of the biggest percentage movers at the close.
American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC) is up 27.59% today at $5.55. Traders poured into AMSC early today and the stock traded nearly 4 million shares, 5 times its daily average volume. AMSC shares have been rising since January 9 when an article written by Reuters shined the light on a dispute between the company and Chinese wind turbine maker Sinovel Wind Group. AMSC is looking to recoup $1.2 billion from the Chinese company. The company has a market cap of 283.84 million.
Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAD) is up 22.83% today at $1.56. ACAD has traded 1.3 million shares today, well above its daily average of 173 thousand shares. ACAD shares have jumped up nearly $.50 a share since the new year thanks to recent acquisitions in the pharmaceutical sector. The company has a market cap of 80.73 million.
Officemax Incorporated (NYSE:OMX) is up 15.48% in afternoon trading at $5.37. OMX has traded 3.7 million shares today, close to double its daily average. OMX shares rose after Barclays Capital upgraded the stock to equal weight from underweight. The company has a market cap of 459.90 million.
Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd (NYSE:STP) is up 14.33% today at $3.67. STP has traded 5.8 million shares today, 2 million shares more than its daily average. STP shares rose following comments by German Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen, who said the solar market in their country is almost growing too quickly and may need to be restricted to maintain sustainable growth. The company has a market cap of 664.43 million.
Majesco Entertainment Company (NASDAQ:COOL) is down 27.18% at the close at $2.17. COOL traded 5.2 million shares today, more than five times its daily average volume. COOL shares took a big hit following a weak 2012 outlook and a bigger loss in the fourth quarter. The company has a market cap of 84.32 million.
Solta Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ:SLTM) is down 9.30% today at $2.34. SLTM traded 416 thousand shares so far today, close to double its daily average volume. SLTM shares have been in a downtrend since around January 11 when the company announced a permanent non-invasive waistline fat reduction procedure. Looks like investors took that opportunity to sell the stock and it has been falling ever since. The company has a market cap 142.36 million.
GenOn Energy, Inc. (NYSE:GEN) is down 9.32% today at $2.14. GEN traded 27.7 million shares today after the stock was downgraded to sell from neutral by UBS. The company has a market cap of 1.65 billion.
Fulton Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:FULT) is down 7.31% this afternoon at $9.77. FULT traded big volume today after the company missed its earnings by $0.02 late yesterday. FULT traded 4.5 million shares today, above its daily average of 1.5 million shares. The company has a market cap of 1.95 billion.
