Gold and Silver Prices Steady on Central Banks Commitment. Stocks to Watch: KGC, ABX, NEM, AUY, GG, AGQ, SLV, HL, SLW, CDE

Gold pricesGold and Silver prices are holding steady today as sellers were thwarted by pledges of coordinated action from central banks across the world if Greece’s elections this week cause market turmoil.

Greeks head to the polls for the second time in the past few months in hopes that a government will be formed this time. The last official poll a few weeks ago showed the left and right parties neck and neck The leftist party rejects the bailout deal from February and both parties wish to remain in the EU. EU officials have reiterated that Greece must adhere to the bailout terms struck earlier this year if it wishes to remain in the EU.

Spot gold prices are up about $4 this morning at $1,627.50 while silver trades slightly higher at $28.710. [Read more...]

AOL, Inc. (NYSE:AOL) is down 5.42% this morning at $25.63. AOL has traded 1.2 million shares so far today and trades 1.8 million shares a day on average. AOL shareholders opted to re elect the company’s 8 member board of directors defeating hedge fund Starboard Value’s attempt to unseat three of them. The company has a market cap of 2.39 billion. Stock Futures Flat As EU Turmoil Ramps Up. Stocks to Watch: NOK, FUN, VOD, ARNA, DNDN, ZNGA, SIRI

Wall Street signAnother day, still the same Euro crisis. Markets across Europe are getting slammed this morning as both Italy and Spain deal with spiking bond yields. The Greek election looms large this weekend, though their stock market did spike today on rumors the bailout would not be scrapped. Market watchers miss the point there. They all want the money. They just don’t want the conditions.

Domestically the jobs picture is becoming bleaker. Jobless claims jumped 6k to 386k after an upward revision of last week’s numbers. Still under the 400k level most economists see as a growing labor market, but from a perception standpoint it is getting decidedly weaker. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Red on Data. Stocks to Watch: JNJ, ARNA, TFM, AONE, FSLR, VOD

Traders at the NYSEEurope on the mind. That is the common refrain from just about every investor. With Greek elections fast approaching, the Spanish bailout ongoing and Italy looking like it is next in line, investors are becoming increasingly cautious. A quick look at the the markets has the Dow futures down 31, the Nasdaq 7 and the S&P 5.

On the economic data front, retail sales fell for the second month in a row, due in large part to falling gas prices. The internals were a mixed a bag with increases in some areas and decreases in others. It did beat consensus expectations of a .3% drop, coming in at .2%. Sign Up For Free Stock Alerts

Wholesale prices also saw a steep decline of 1%, thanks to the falling oil prices. This was in line with expectations and energy saw a 4.3% decline.

Commodities are following the overall market lower. Oil prices are down slightly with Nymex crude futures down 42 cents to $82.90. Gold is also tracking slightly lower, down $2.40 to $1611 per ounce. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks are holding their earlier gains today as financials trend higher. Volatility will continue to plague the markets as investors worry about all the uncertainty in Europe. Stocks gave were mostly flat this morning after Fitch downgraded the long-term ratings on 18 Spanish banks, but recovered later in the day.

Stock Futures Up On Temporary Spanish Reprieve. Stocks to Watch: VOD, MU, BIDU, ARNA, CHK, AA, GRPN

Wall Street signStock futures are higher this morning, though well off their overnight highs, after the Spanish bank bailout was announced. While it has bought Spain some time and space, the systemic issues remain and s a result bond yields are exploding both in Spain and Italy. This will likely only cause a re-bailout of a just bailed out country.

A quick snapshot of the futures market has Dow futures up 61, the Nasdaq 12 and the S&P up just under 6 points.

Stock Futures Give Up Ground to Weekend Jitters. Stocks to Watch: CHK, MCD, SIRI, YHOO, ZNGA, NOK, RIO

Wall StreetThe lack of any substantial QE hints have investors on edge going into the weekend. The whole basis of the rally it seems was the notion that QE3 was right around the corner and the congressional testimony by Bernanke didn’t reveal anything new. A quick look at the three major indices has the Dow futures down 52, the Nasdaq down nearly 8 and the S&P off 5 points going into the market open.

China’s rate cut, while initially hailed, is now worrying investors that it was some sort of pre-planned move due to bad data. Upcoming data out of China includes PPI, CPI, industrial production, retail sales and fixed-asset investment. Sign Up For Free Stock Alerts

Europe continues to remain an ongoing concern with the expectation that Spain will soon ask for a bailout of its financial institutions. Always expect the unexpected out the EU as the rumor mill continues to churn in both directions.

Commodities are following the rest of the market sharply lower. Oil prices are really taking it on the chin this morning as Nymex crude futures are down 3% to $82.25. Gold prices continue to give up ground, off another $9 to $1578.90 per ounce. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Higher on Global Easing. Stocks to Watch: SIRI, FB, BIDU, ZNGA, AMZN, CHK

Wall Street signAll eyes will be on Fed chairman Ben Bernanke after China joined the global easing party overnight by cutting lending and deposit rates by 25 bps. Investors are obviously counting on some sort of easing as futures are extending the gains of yesterday’s bull market. Dow futures are up 66 points, Nasdaq futures are adding 16 and the S&P 10 points.

Bernanke is scheduled to testify before a congressional panel at 10am EST. Investors are hoping that he drops further hints about QE3. Analysts say that if he does the risk rally of the past two days will continue.

On the economic data front, jobless claims are slated for release at 8:30am EST. The employment picture has become bleaker as of late with an uptick in unemployment. It will definitely be an index to continue to watch for those hoping for a return of QE. [Read more...]

Hot Stocks to Watch: LEE, HOV, AMRS, INVN, WFR, ACOM

investment newsBack in black. No, not the AC/DC album. The Dow is back in the black for 2012. The bulls returned to the market this morning after the ECB kept rates unchanged and a hint of further monetary easing in the future by a Fed regional president. After getting pummeled due to lackluster economic data, the market seems to have found at least a temporary bottom and is bouncing off of it. Even Facebook is positive on the day.

The ECB decision to keep rates unchanged shifts the focus back on the EU politicians to come up with a long-term solution. It basically checks to them to solve the issues vs opening up the floodgates of monetary easing. Judging by the lack of will among the EU leaders, this could just be a temporary reprieve for the EU.
