Stock Futures Drift Ahead of NFP Report, Stocks to Watch: ZNGA, FB, CTIC, VRNG, HPQ, TM

The market is in a wait and see mode as investors look to the NFP report for direction. Last month’s announcement of QE3 means that if the numbers disappoint, the likelihood of additional stimulus is essentially zero. Expectations are for 110k jobs and a downtick of the unemployment rate to 8.1%.

Market watchers are still trying to determine the outcomes of the election and their effects on the market. Romney seems more inclined to tackle the deficit which would harm the market in the short term. He has also pledged to replace Fed chief Ben Bernanke after his term is up. Granted this is all said in the heat of the campaign, and seeing as Romney’s biggest contributors are investment houses, it is probably doubtful anything major would happen.

In commodities, oil prices are dropping this morning with Nymex futures down 91 cents to $90.80 per barrel. Gold is also off a bit as it trades near the $1800 per ounce level.

Internationally most markets were up in the overnight hours. Japan took a brief dip after the BOJ refrained from announcing further monetary easing action. Japan ended their session higher though as investors shook that piece of news off. [Read more...]

The major stock averages are up in midday trading thanks to encouraging comments from ECB President Mario Draghi. Draghi said today that the announcement of the ECB’s bond buying program has helped ease market tensions. He also said the central bank stands ready to buy bonds of any euro zone country that asks for it. This bodes well for the widely expected Spanish bailout that could come as early as this weekend.

Investors will be watching tomorrow very closely as new unemployment numbers are released. At midday, the Dow is up 67 points, the Nasdaq is up 2 points and the S&P 500 is up 7 points. [Read more...]

The market managed to get out of negative territory in morning trading thanks to better than expected ISM numbers. The ISM’s non-manufacturing index climbed to 55.1 in September, about 2 points higher than what economists had expected. Private sector employment also saw a better than expected jump in last month with employers adding 162,000 jobs. Most economists were expecting private sector employment to add 143,000.

The major stock averages are up slightly after being negative earlier today. The Dow is up 3 points, the Nasdaq is up 7 points and the S&P 500 is up 1 point. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Drift Into Positive Territory on ADP Report, Stocks to Watch: FDO, PCS, SRPT, VOD, NOK, AMRN

Europe’s woes continued to keep a lid on Wall Street early Wednesday as speculation over a Spanish bailout runs rampant. The release of the ADP numbers saw private payrolls gain 162k jobs, though previous months gains were revised lower. This leads into the all important NFP numbers set for release on Friday.

The better than expected ADP numbers are leading to a modest spike in futures with the Dow futures up 20, the Nasdaq up 9 and the S&P adding just over 2.

Other domestic data traders are watching for this morning includes the ISM survey of business confidence in the service sector. The reading is expected to hold steady at 53.7. Some analysts are hoping for a surprise to the upside, similar to ISM reading earlier this week.

Internationally, the data was decidedly gloomy. Europe continues to be mired in what is now called their inevitable recession. the final EU composite PMI for September fell again. In China, the non-manufacturing purchasing manager’s index barely held on to an expansion, printing a 53.7. This was down from 56.3 in August. Consumer sentiment in the country also remains weak as China’s situation looks increasingly precarious.

In commodities, oil prices continued to slip with crude-oil futures down 91 cents to 90.98 per barrel. Gold prices kept heading higher this morning with futures adding seven dollars an ounce to $1782. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Up Following Yesterday’s Rally, Stocks to Watch: SIRI, ILMN, RIMM, CTIC, NOK, BAC

Stocks are set to open higher this morning following yesterday’s rally thanks to better than expected manufacturing data. The market was in full rally mode much of yesterday, but did give back a decent amount of its gains after Ben Bernanke expressed his concerns about economic growth in the U.S. European economic problems also continue to weigh heavily on investors with Spain’s economic health being the main concern. Spain saw its unemployment jump again last month and some European officials are saying Spain could ask for a bailout as soon as this weekend.

Futures are showing the major stock averages opening about 0.5% higher today with Dow futures up 49 points, Nasdaq up 11 points and the S&P 500 up 7 points. [Read more...]
