Stocks are rallying as investors are optimistic that Greece get past a key hurdle with its private creditors. Commodities are also rallying alongside the market today with gold up about $19 at $1,702.80 and oil is up $0.86 at $107. The Dow is up 88 points, the Nasdaq is 38 points and the S&P 500 is up 15 points.

Wall StreetConsumer credit jumped in January, but there was a caveat – credit card usage declined. This could pressure earnings for card issuers who depend on free-spending consumers. Continued worries surrounding the economy could be causing consumers to pull-back from purchases after the holidays.

Credit has been expanding for five straight months as consumers come back into the light and make big ticket purchases. It could also be the recession lasted so long that big purchases like automobiles etc are in need of replacement. NasdaqStocks are trading higher this morning thanks to optimism that Greece will complete its debt swap deal. Investors seemed to ignore the slightly negative jobless data today as weekly claims jumped 8,000 last week to 362,000. Economists were expecting claims to remain at 351,000. The major stock indices have given up some of their early gains, but remain positive right now. The Dow is up 40 points, the Nasdaq is up 17 points and the S&P 500 is up 7 points.

Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ:DNDN) is down 14.90% this morning at $9.25. DNDN has traded 13.1 million shares so far today, 3 million shares more than its daily average. Stocks Jump on Renewed Greek Hopes. Stocks to Watch: IPSU, ARUN, CLWR, AMLN, AEO, AIG, NFLX

Stock FuturesStock futures are sharply higher as the risk-on appetite returns to the street. Investors are optimistic that the Greek debt-swap will go off without a hitch, and that is sending the market higher. The central banks of Europe are scheduled to meet and jobless claims reign over the market this morning.

Dow futures are currently up 85 points to 12,926. Nasdaq 100 futures are up 17.50 to 2,626. The S&P 500 futures are rounding out the pre-market gains, up 11.25 to 1,364.

Jobless claims jumped 8k from last week. The number still remains under the 400k barrier that is a signal for positive labor growth. This shows that the recovery, while taking hold, is rather anemic. If the market was a looking for the catalyst to blow by Dow 13k, this is not it.

Internationally it is all about Greece. A successful auction will give rise to optimism the market desperately needs. Asia also broke their three-day losing streak on the back of the domestic rally yesterday. [Read more...]

What the translates to the unemployment rate will be revealed on Friday. The rally domestically is having a carryover effect in Asia. Asian markets are all advancing on the back of the US rally along with optimism over the Greek debt-swap. It remains to be seen if this will give the markets some clear direction in which way to head.

Weekly March 9 AMZN options are seeing decent volume today with over 10,000 contracts traded at strike prices $185. Calls at $185 have traded over 7,000 contracts and are up $0.57 at $1.60. The stock trades 293 thousand shares a day on average. VRML shares are slipping today after they rallied more than 100% yesterday following news of Category 1 CPT code approval for OVA1. Vermillion was also downgraded by Ladenburg Thalmann today sell from neutral. The company has a market cap of 31.79 million.

Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:KERX) is down 9.20% today at $3.98. KERX has traded 3.3 million shares so far today, about double its daily average volume. Gold pricesGold prices are looking to break a multi-day losing streak today. Gold is currently trading up $12.30 at $1,684.40. The price of gold took a hit along with everything else in yesterday’s market wide sell off. Everyone’s favorite bear, Marc Faber, continues to be a big bull when it comes to gold. He believes that a war between in Iran and Israel is “almost inevitable.” Faber recommends investors “have to be in gold and stocks.”

NASDAQ Stocks Rallying With Market: TRCR, BONT, TBET, AGEN, SNSS, CIEN

list of nasdaq stocksStocks are rallying today, one day after taking their biggest hit in recent months. Greece continues to be in focus, but better than expected economic data helped lift stocks today. According to the ADP National Employment Report, private employers created 216,000 jobs last month. This beat expectations of 208,000. Investors are also looking ahead to Friday’s monthly government jobs report. Many economists are expecting a gain of 210,000 in nonfarm payrolls and 225,000 jobs in the private sector.

Greece will stay in the spotlight for many investors at least until the Thursday night deadline for the country’s creditors to take the credit swap deal passes. Financials are helping lift the stock market today with Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC) up more than 2% and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) up more than 3%. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is also seeing a 1% jump today as investors and consumers eagerly await the unveiling of the iPad 3 later today.

At noon the Dow is up 74 points, the Nasdaq is up 27 points and the S&P 500 is up 8 points. [Read more...]

ADP Numbers Buoy Stock Futures. Stocks to Watch: DSCO, NFLX, ZNGA, MU, RENN, P, CSIQ

Stock FuturesAfter yesterday’s drubbing, the market is looking to regain some of its footing. Greek debt worries still remain, but it seems the ‘shrugging off’ attitude has returned to the street. Plus there is going to be a new iPad today. Nothing like a shiny new toy to shift attention. Dow futures are currently up 44 points to 12,788. Nasdaq 100 futures are up 11.25 points to 2,601. The S&P 500 futures are rounding out the pre-market gains, up 5 points to 1,347.

Private sector employment numbers continue to show growth, adding 216k jobs in February. What this translates to the non-farm payrolls will be unveiled later this week. Probably not as good, but this is a positive sign for the labor market.

Most of the major markets are rebounding after yesterday’s losses. More of a take a breather day. The exception being Asia, which responded to the red day on the street. [Read more...]

Stocks Fall Big on Stock Market Today: SNSS, UVXY, MWW, AEZS, KERX, BVSN

Wall StreetStocks are taking a licking today as Greek fears sends the Dow down more than 200 points. Greece is just one of many worries investors are facing right now including slower growth in China and in Europe. Even gold, which is seen as a flight to safety, is getting hit hard today. Oil prices are also dropping today and are currently around $105/barrel, down from nearly $110 last week.

There are some positive stocks in the stock market, but they are few and far between. Let’s take a quick look at some of the more active stocks today.
