Midday Movers: DRYS, BAC, MU, ALU, GT, ENER, CPN

DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS) is up 11.30% in midday trading at $3.72. DRYS is up on heavy volume today with 39.8 million shares traded so far. The stock averages only 6 million shares a day. DRYS announced earlier this month that its drilling unit, Ocean Rig UDW, won a contract to drill 15 wells in the Norwegian Shelf. DRYS shares are up about $1.50 over hte past week and a half. Bank of America Corporation (NYSE:BAC) is down 3.39% today at $7.98. BAC has traded 224 million shares so far today and trades 278 million shares on average. BAC and financial stocks are falling alongside the overall market today after retail sales data fell short of estimates. BAC shares had been over $8 over the past few days, but have fallen below $8 in midday trading today. The company has a market cap of 84.45 billion.

Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) is up 5.22% today at $8.27. MU has traded 26 million shares today and trades 31.1 million shares a day on average. MU shares are up more than $1 on the year and are at their highest point so far in 2012. The company has a market cap of 8.19 billion.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) is up 4.11% in midday trading at $2.27. ALU has traded 14.7 million shares so far today and trades 18.1 million shares a day on average. Alcatel announced its latest addition to the lightRadio product line today. LightRadio Wi-Fi will make it simpler for people to access the internet over secure Wi-Fi connections or hotspot locations. The company has a market cap of 5.15 billion.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE:GT) is down 5.48% today at $13.20. GT is down on heavy volume with 17.6 million shares traded today. GT usually trades 4.8 million shares a day on average. Goodyear announced fourth quarter results today and saw its first annual profit in three years. The company missed Wall Street estimates however as Goodyear reports $0.07 a share in profit. Analysts were expecting $0.21 a share. The company has a market cap of 3.24 billion.

Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:ENER) is down nearly 80% in midday trading at $0.2989. ENER has traded 32.8 million shares today, well above its average volume of 2.7 million shares. Energy Conversion announced today it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company has a market cap of 15.06 million.

Calpine Corporation (NYSE:CPN) is down 4.65% today at $15.47. CPN has traded 13.5 million shares so far today, 5 times its average volume. CPN shares jumped last week after the company reported fourth quarter results. The company has a market cap of 7.45 billion.
