After Hours Trading Report for April 17

Investors at the NYSEA sense of calm over Europe helped tech stocks power the broader market to a massive rally. The Dow logged its best day in a month with IBM pushing higher ahead of earnings – the stock is dropping in after-hours as its earnings released.

Earnings season is in full swing with Yahoo shares jumping in after-hours after the company swung to a 1st quarter profit.

Gold prices also ended the day higher, breaking a two session losing streak. The metal is matching the moves of the broader market, but in a more muted fashion. It seems gold lacks direction as it weighs news out of Europe but realizes that the concern over their debt situation is far from resolved. [Read more...]

Futures Sharply Negative After NFP Numbers. Stocks to Watch

Wall StreetThe miss in payrolls has Wall Street deep in negative territory in premarket trading. Chinese CPI numbers are also helping fuel the decline as gains in consumer prices accelerated in March. Dow futures are currently down 118 points. Nasdaq futures are off nearly 29 points and the S&P 500 is shedding 15.

While the unemployment level ticked down, the NFP report was a disappointment taken as a whole. Expectations for report were set at 210k jobs created in March. Instead, the number came in at 120k. This marked the first time that the NFP job creation number had been below 200k since November.

Analysts say that the one silver lining to the report is that the QE3 carrot that has been dangling will get a little closer to reality now. No economic data is slated for release, but Ben Bernanke is expected to deliver a speech this evening in Georgia. This will be closely watched to see if he gives an indication about where the Fed might be heading. [Read more...]

Shares of AEZS and KERX tanked this morning on news their cancer drug fails trial. The company has a market cap of 80.28 million.

Pinnacle Airlines Corp. (NASDAQ:PNCL) is down 55.16% today at $0.61. PNCL has traded 2.3 million shares this morning, more than 10 times its daily average volume. Pinnacle Airlines filed for Chapter 11 protection today. The company has a market cap of 11.48 million.

AVI Biopharma, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVII) is down 24.06% today at 1.1695. AVII has traded over 9 million shares this morning, 9 times its average volume. AVII shares are down after its Eterplirsen study showed no significant improvement in walking. The company has a market cap of 161.53 million. [Read more...]

Wall Street signThe stock market is turning lower this afternoon one day after a market wide rally sent the major indices up more than 1%. The choppy trading is mostly due to the lack of a catalyst to send it one way or the other. Economic data is fairly light today, so no respite there. The stress test results yesterday afternoon have already been digested and the market seems to have moved on.

Enter Goldman Sachs. You can tell the street is bored when all anyone talks about is an op-ed in the NYTimes. A former exec penned an op-ed in which he scathingly critiqued the people and the culture of Goldman Sachs. Pretty sure we saw this with the Matt Taibbi piece but hey, nice to have a confirmation.
