Stock Futures Retreat on China and Europe Worries, Stocks to Watch

Stock FuturesDeja vu on the market again this morning. The concern? Europe. Just when you thought it was safe to go back outside another sovereign debt issue creeps up. This time around it is Spain. Plus mix in some Chinese growth concerns and you have the right mix for a volatile day on the street. Dow futures are negative this morning down 30 points to 13,023. Nasdaq 100 futures are down just over 6 points to 2,761. The S&P 500 futures are rounding out the pre-market volatility, down slightly to 1,396.50.

The big economic data point out this morning is jobless claims. A print of 359k is being spun as a decline by the BLS because of an upward revision of last week’s numbers. What an awesome tool to have. This week’s numbers are great because I could not add correctly last week, so those were actually worse. Beginning to wonder if they have ever had to revise the number downward.

Spanish and European officials are denying the reports that EU officials have been urging their Spanish counterparts to start the process of seeking a bailout from the IMF and ECB. Of course if this story sounds familiar, it is because you just watched the trilogy in Greece. Spain’s austerity drive has already prompted a country-wide strike and will likely lead to further political turmoil in the country.

Sliding growth in China also has investors concerned. The constant misses on their manufacturing numbers have increased the fear of a hard landing in the country. Plus investors think the slowdown is tied to Europe so that has them girding for more EU misery.

Commodities continue to e extremely volatile this morning. Gold prices essentially flat after whipsawing between positive and negative territory. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Push Higher on Bernanke Comments. Stocks to Watch

Stock FuturesPre-market trading is being buoyed by a Bernanke speech in which he suggested that more economic stimulus could create better labor conditions. He did raise concerns over whether the current pace of the labor recovery could be maintained in the face of weak demand, both domestically and internationally. Dow futures are currently up 78 points to 13,109. Nasdaq 100 futures are adding 19 points to 2,748. S&P 500 futures are rounding out the morning’s pre-market gains, up 8.75 to 1,402.75.

On the economic calendar, pending home sales are slated to be released at 10am EST. This will be another gauge as to if the housing market is actually recovering. Other news is the ongoing Federal Reserve Chief Ben Bernanke’s speech which began at 8am EST.

Overseas, Asian markets traded mostly flat. Europe on the whole traded higher. The outlier there was Spain which is taking a loss thanks to some election news. The ruling party won a regional election but failed to secure an outright majority. This may make instituting needed reforms difficult. Spain is suffering from crippling unemployment and a growing sovereign debt issue.

Commodities are following the broader market higher this morning. Gold prices are up over $15 to $1,677 per ounce. Gold bulls seem the be encouraged every time Bernanke utters the word stimulus.

Oil prices are also higher this morning. Nymex crude futures are up 32 cents to over $107 per barrel. The energy prices will start to weigh on the market when consumer confidence numbers are released tomorrow. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Negative on G20 News. Stocks to Watch: LNG, CHTP, PCS, LOW, NOK, ATPG, AAPL

Stock FuturesOver the weekend the G20 meeting of finance ministers decided to delay expansion of IMF funding until Europe increased the size of its own rescue package. They pressed European leaders to shore up the firewall to contain any spillover over the sovereign debt crisis. Dow futures are currently down 43 points to 12,918. Nasdaq 100 futures are off 9.50 points to 2,592. S&P 500 futures are rounding out the decline, down 5.75 points to 1,357.50.

The European markets are expected to be in sharp focus this week. Numerous events such as bond auctions and votes on the Greek bailout will take center stage this week. The German Parliament is expected to vote on the package this week. While it is expected to pass, investors should pay close attention in case the debate shifts the outcome.

The economic data a calendar is fairly light today, with pending home sales data slated for release at 10am EST. [Read more...]

Futures Set To Push Dow Past Barrier. Stocks to Watch: CHTP, AIG, NOK, DRYS, DECK, CROX, CLWR

Stock FuturesLooks like it may be time to break out the Dow 13k hats. A series of upbeat economic reports is helping push the futures past that psychological barrier. One possible hindrance in the short and medium term is the price of oil. Already shooting past $105, any gains in consumer confidence can be quickly erased if gas prices get out of hand.

The euphoria in the rally is helped by the belief by investors that there are sufficient firewalls in place to protect the market against default events. Namely Greece. While it may be able to absorb Greece, one has to wonder about contagion spreading to other EU countries such as Span and Portugal.

The economic data calendar to end the week is fairly stacked. Both consumer sentiment and new home sales data are expected to be released at 10am EST. [Read more...]
