Nasdaq Stocks Rallying as Market Trades Flat: KUTV, ZOLL, JVA, VELT, FCEL, COOL

Nasdaq StocksStocks aren’t seeing a lot of movement today after economic data from China. China’s trade balance fell $31.5 billion into the red in February, the largest deficit in at least 10 years and caused doubts about about what caused the drop, weak foreign demand or a seasonal drop. Investors will also be keeping an eye on Tuesday’s statement from the Federal Open Market Committee to gauge the direction on monetary policy. The Dow is up 15 points this morning, the Nasdaq is down about 1 point and the S&P 500 is down a half point.

Oil prices fell today which should help consumers at the pump if the prices continue to drop even further. Gold is also down and is trading below $1,700. [Read more...]

Market Turns Positive and Afternoon Movers: FBN, HDSN, NUVA, COOL, ERIC, BLRX, BVSN, GLW

The market is turning higher in midday trading after the Fed pledges to not raise interest rates until at least late 2014. Economic conditions “are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least through late 2014,” the central bank said in a statement. The Federal Reserve still describes the unemployment rate as “elevated” and expects inflation to stay at levels consistent with stable prices. The market reacted favorably to the news with the Dow up 30 points, the Nasdaq up 21 points and the S&P 500 is up 5 points.

Furniture Brands International (NYSE:FBN) is up 17.87% today at $1.7799. FBN has traded 1.3 million shares so far today, more than double its daily average. FBN shares are up more than $0.40 a share since the new year. FBN has earnings coming up at the end of the month. The company has a market cap of 99.34 million. Hudson Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:HDSN) is up 13.09% today at $2.4540. HDSN has traded 624 thousand shares today, way above its daily average of 32 thousand shares. Stocks are finishing strong today thanks to reports that Greece could reach a deal with its creditors by the end of the week. This news helped keep the early rally going today. A better than expected housing market sent stocks in the green right out of the gate. At the closing bel the Dow is up nearly 90 points, the Nasdaq is up more than 40 points and the S&P is up 14 points.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest percentage movers at the close.

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC) is up 27.59% today at $5.55. Traders poured into AMSC early today and the stock traded nearly 4 million shares, 5 times its daily average volume. AMSC shares have been rising since January 9 when an article written by Reuters shined the light on a dispute between the company and Chinese wind turbine maker Sinovel Wind Group. AMSC is looking to recoup $1.2 billion from the Chinese company. The company has a market cap of 283.84 million.

Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAD) is up 22.83% today at $1.56. ACAD has traded 1.3 million shares today, well above its daily average of 173 thousand shares. ACAD shares have jumped up nearly $.50 a share since the new year thanks to recent acquisitions in the pharmaceutical sector. The company has a market cap of 80.73 million.

Officemax Incorporated (NYSE:OMX) is up 15.48% in afternoon trading at $5.37. OMX has traded 3.7 million shares today, close to double its daily average. OMX shares rose after Barclays Capital upgraded the stock to equal weight from underweight. The company has a market cap of 459.90 million.

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd (NYSE:STP) is up 14.33% today at $3.67. STP has traded 5.8 million shares today, 2 million shares more than its daily average. STP shares rose following comments by German Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen, who said the solar market in their country is almost growing too quickly and may need to be restricted to maintain sustainable growth. The company has a market cap of 664.43 million.

Majesco Entertainment Company (NASDAQ:COOL) is down 27.18% at the close at $2.17. COOL traded 5.2 million shares today, more than five times its daily average volume. COOL shares took a big hit following a weak 2012 outlook and a bigger loss in the fourth quarter. The company has a market cap of 84.32 million.

Solta Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ:SLTM) is down 9.30% today at $2.34. SLTM traded 416 thousand shares so far today, close to double its daily average volume. SLTM shares have been in a downtrend since around January 11 when the company announced a permanent non-invasive waistline fat reduction procedure. Looks like investors took that opportunity to sell the stock and it has been falling ever since. The company has a market cap 142.36 million.

GenOn Energy, Inc. (NYSE:GEN) is down 9.32% today at $2.14. GEN traded 27.7 million shares today after the stock was downgraded to sell from neutral by UBS. The company has a market cap of 1.65 billion.

Fulton Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:FULT) is down 7.31% this afternoon at $9.77. FULT traded big volume today after the company missed its earnings by $0.02 late yesterday. FULT traded 4.5 million shares today, above its daily average of 1.5 million shares. The company has a market cap of 1.95 billion.

NBG shares are up after the bank said Monday it completed a buy back program for outstanding covered and hybrid securities in order to boost capital. The company has a market cap of 9.32 billion.

Idenix Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDIX) is up 4.14% in pre market trading at $14.20. IDIX trades 1.5 million shares a day on average. IDIX shares are up more than $8 a share since the start of the year. This jump comes as other similar companies have been acquired recently and investors are hoping for the same with Idenix. The company has a market cap of 1.31 billion.

Majesco Entertainment Company (NASDAQ:COOL) is down 21.48% in pre market trading at $2.34. COOL shares are falling after the company’s fourth quarter loss grew and expects 2012 to be weaker than estimates. COOL trades close to a million shares on average and has a market cap of 115.79 million.

JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ:JBLU) is down 2.09% today at $5.15. JBLU trades 6 million shares a day on average. JBLU shares have been falling for about a week now and has fallen close to $1 in that time period. The company has a market cap of 1.56 billion.

Patriot Coal Corporation (NYSE:PCX) is down 5.43% today at $6.97. PCX has traded over 200 thousand shares already this morning and trades a little over 6 million shares a day on average. The company has a market cap of 673.47 million. Coal mining companies dropped yesterday on forecast of lower prices as customers switch to natural gas. The company has a market cap of 673.09 million.

YHOO closed the day at $15.43 and is currently trading at $15.88 in after hours. YHOO traded 14.8 million shares today, about 6 million less than the stock trades on average. The company has a market cap of 19.14 billion.

Ivanhoe Mines Ltd (NYSE:IVN) is up 2.21% in after hours trading at $19.40. IVN closed the day down 4.33% after being up briefly in morning trading. IVN pulled back today after seeing a big spike yesterday afternoon when the stock jumped about $2 a share. The company has a market cap of 14.02 billion.

BancorpSouth, Inc. (NYSE:BXS) is down 3.86% in after hours trading at $11.72. BXS share fell after they announced an underwritten public offering of $100 million of its common stock.
