Wall StreetThe major stock averages are turning negative in late morning trading after beginning the day in positive territory. The market continues to trade mostly flat as investors await Bernanke’s speech at Jackson Hole, WY later this week. The Commerce Department said today the U.S. economy expanded at a slightly better 1.7% annual rate in the second quarter. The housing industry also saw some good news today as pending home sales jumped to their highest level in the past two years.

A quick look at the markets show the Dow up just barely with a 0.55 point gain, the Nasdaq is down about 2 points and the S&P 500 is down 0.30 points. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks are rallying today as economic data came in better than expected and comments from Mario Draghi, the ECB President, pledging to save the euro zone. Draghi said he will do “whatever it takes” to insure the euro zone does not collapse.

Good news from the jobs report also sent the market higher with weekly jobless claims falling 35,000 to 353,000. This is near a four year low according to the Labor Department. Durable goods orders increased last month as demand for aircraft jumped. Overall, durable goods orders went up 1.6%, more than 1% higher than predicted.

The Dow is currently up 160 points, the Nasdaq is up 29 points and the S&P 500 is up 15 points. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks are getting a boost today today from a Greek poll and China’s move towards more stimulus measures. The Greek poll in question showed a majority of Greeks wanting to stay in the EU. Granted the devil is in the details and the same poll shows the anti-bailout parties with growing leads heading into the June elections. China’s move into more growth oriented policies is also helping bolster stocks.

Domestically the data is more muddled. The Case Shiller index showed that housing prices had not dipped further. The markets are taking an optimistic view of that as any silver lining for housing is a good sign. Consumer confidence did take an unexpected hit with the print missing expectations. Consumers are becoming more pessimistic about future conditions. More than likely this is due to the steady diet of poor news out of the EU entering the psyche of the consumer. Bull outside NYSEAs we head into the Memorial Day weekend, the stock market is essentially flat. The HP results and job-cuts at the company is helping the Dow erase early minor losses. Jobless claims also had a slight dip which is helping prop up the domestic markets.

Internationally, Europe remains the the biggest concern as Greece hurtles towards new elections in mid-June. The feeling among many Euro watchers is that greece is ehading for an exit, it is justa matter of how cleanly they exit. If it gets messy, the contagion risk is real for the broader EU zone. Wall Street signStocks are up in the first half of trading today thanks to better than expected home sales report. Existing home sales saw a 3.4% rise to annual rate of 4.62 million units in April, the highest its been in nearly two years. The positive housing news helped bring markets up after they opened mixed following a Japan credit downgrade.
