Stocks Erase Most of their Losses, Stock Movers: HMSY, CHTP, EMMS, GNW, KGJI, RBS

Floor of the New York Stock ExchangeStocks finish slightly lower today after being down more than 1% earlier in the trading day. Investors took no news as good news this afternoon as German Chancellor Angela Merkel canceled her EU summit press conference tonight. Stocks were down big earlier in the day as worries over the EU debt crisis and the surprising Supreme Court decision on healthcare shook the market. Tomorrow should be an interesting day as we look to see what if any solution has been fleshed out of the 2 day EU summit.

The Dow ended the day down 24 points, the Nasdaq down 25 points and the S&P 500 down 2 points. [Read more...]

The company also announced the resignation of its CFO, three directors and its board chairman. The company has a market cap of 1.74 billion.

Maxwell Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:MWXL) is down 41.21% in early trading at $9.28. MWXL has traded 2.6 million shares so far today, well above its daily average of 215 thousand shares a day on average. Stocks With Unusual Volume in Midday Trading: RAX, SIG, HMSY, FTEK, MTG

Many stocks are seeing big volume increases today as earnings season continues.

Rackspace Hosting, Inc. (NYSE:RAX) is up $1.84 at $43.59 today, a gain of 4.41%. RAX has traded 2 million shares already today, 400 thousand more shares than it usually trades in a whole day. Rackspace announced Q3 earnings yesterday and met Wall Street’s expectations of EPS $0.14 and saw slightly higher than expected revenue of $265 million. The company’s server count rose by 6% in the third quarter. Rackspace Hosting has a current market cap of 5.73 billion.

Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) is up 5.50% today at $45.04. The S&P announced yesterday Signet will be replacing Varian in the S&P MidCap 400 on November 10. SIG has is up on 50% higher volume with 1.5 million shares traded. The stock trades 982 thousand shares on average.The company has a current market cap of 3.87 billion.

HMS Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:HMSY) is up $1.25 at $29.98, up 4.35%. HMSY has traded 937 thousand shares so far today after the company announced on November 7 it will purchase HealthDataInsights, Inc. for $400 million. The stock has a daily average volume of 691 thousand shares. The company has a current market cap of 2.56 billion.

Fuel-Tech Inc. (NASDAQ:FTEK) is up 22.28% today at $6.64. FTEK has traded 175 thousand shares today, already above its daily average of 158 thousand shares. Fuel Tech announced this morning they were awarded air pollution control orders worth $3.2 million. The company has a current market cap of 157.68 million.

MGIC Investment Corp. (NYSE:MTG) is up $0.27 at $3.19, a gain of 8.5%. MTG released operating statistics for October this morning. MTG has traded 10.8 million shares so far today, 2 million more than its daily average volume. The company has a current market cap of 637.27 million.
