Stocks Take a Break From Rally, NASDAQ Stocks to Watch

Nasdaq stocksThe stock market is trading lower today putting a hold on the S&P 500 as it nears it’s historic closing high. Housing data was a bit mixed today as permits for future construction jumped to a more than 3-year high and housing starts fell.

China is also a bit of a concern as investors worry about signs of slowing in the country’s economy. Australian miners signaled this morning that ire ore demand was down.

Overall, there’s not much going on today in term’s of economic news or other catalysts to drive the market. Many analysts continue to call for a meaningful pull back, but today could just be a profit taking day for some investors.

Looking at the markets this morning show the Dow down more than 90 points, the Nasdaq down more than 20 points and the S&P 500 down about 9 points. [Read more...]

Durable Goods Miss Pushes Futures Off Highs. Stocks to Watch: PSDV, ALIM, JASO, ZAGG, BDSI, PCLN, HGSI

Stock FuturesA slight pullback in oil prices is sending stock futures higher as we head into the open. Investors are also looking towards a long-term liquidity operation in the EU to determine the risk-appetite going forward. Dow futures are currently up 16 points to 12,985. Nasdaq 100 futures are up 4.25 pints to 2,612. The S&P 500 futures are rounding out the gains, up 1.50 points to 1,368.50.

Oil prices, down most of the session, have come back off their lows to trade slightly negative. Nymex futures are still in the $108 per barrel range after hitting a 9-month high of 109 last week. The worry with rising prices is that it will dampen consumer spending.

The big event out of Europe today will be the LTRO. The ECB is expected to announce the results of its second three-year LTRO. The once they conducted in December had more than 500 banks tap the ECB to the tune of 489 billion Euros. [Read more...]

New home purchases fell in December and made 2011 the worst year for home sales on record. 302,000 homes were sold last year, down from 323,000 sold in 2010. The Dow is trading off its highs with a 24 point gain, the Nasdaq is down 7 points and the S&P 500 is down 2 points.

Micromet, Inc. (NASDAQ:MITI) is up 32% in early trading at $10.93. MITI is up on heavy volume following news that Amgen will buy the company for $1.16 billion. The offer is at $11 a share, a 33% premium of Micromet’s closing price on Wednesday. MITI has traded 52 million shares so far today, well above its daily average of 588 thousand shares. Spain and France both saw strong demand at their most recent government debt auctions. Closer to home, weekly jobless claims came in at 352,000. This is the lowest they’ve been in four years. Jobless claims under 375,000 show strength in the jobs market and can lower the unemployment rate. The indices are up in the last hour of trading with the Dow jumping 36 points, the Nasdaq up 18 points and the S&P up 6 points.

8×8 Inc. (NASDAQ:EGHT) is up 26.25% today at $4.30. EGHT shares are up after reporting earnings yesterday that exceeded expectations. EGHT reported revenue of $23 million and EPS of $0.04, both beating analysts estimates. EGHT has traded huge volume today with 6.3 million shares traded, ten times its daily average. The company has a market cap of 299.74 million.

NetScout Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTCT) is up 17.07% in afternoon trading at $19.97. NTCT has traded 1.1 million shares today, well above its daily average of 283 thousand shares. Analysts are looking for net income of $0.39 per share, a drop of 39.1% from the company’s earnings in the same quarter last year. Analysts are also predicting a profit of $2.02 per share, down nearly 19% from last year. The company has a market cap of 38.53 billion.

Stock Futures Strong After Successful Bond Auctions. Stocks to Watch: JASO, BAC, MNST, DNDN, AAPL, SHLD, WYNN

US stock futures were following Europe’s lead higher this morning after Spain and Italy’s successful bond auctions. Traders were also waiting for a string of economic reports and are watching the ECB taking place this morning in Europe. Dow futures are currently up 50 points to 12,438. Nasdaq 100 futures are adding 15 points to 2,382.S&P 500 futures are rounding out the gains adding over 7 points to 1,296.

Europe is back in focus this morning and for once it gives a few pieces of good news. The banking heavy Stoxx 600 Index is up .82% after the successful bond auctions in Spain and Italy. The drop in borrowing costs helped take the pressure off the regions hard-hit banking sector.

Thursday’s economic data calendar is also stacked. At 8:30am the weekly jobless claims report releases and November inventory numbers will be released at 10am. Investors are hoping the jobless numbers continue to show a strengthening labor market.

Corporate news should bring PVH Corp. into focus. The company raised its outlook overnight on the strength of brand performance, specially Calvin Klein. Shares of Chevron are dropping in pre-market trading after the company warned of weakness in downstream business areas.

Overnight trading in Asia was to the downside as investors worried about the upcoming bond auctions in the EU. Inflationary numbers out of China showed a slight easing, but food inflation continues to run rampant. This may give officials there the leverage they need to ease monetary policy to keep Chinese growth strong and prevent a hard-landing.

Commodities, especially precious metals,continue their broad-based rally in 2012. Gold prices are up another percent this morning to $1657 per ounce. Nymex crude oil futures are also up, adding $1.29 to $102 per barrel.

Stocks to watch today include JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ:JASO), Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), Monster Beverage Corp. (NASDAQ:MNST), Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ:DNDN), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD) and Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN)

JA Solar Holdings, Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ:JASO) is up 6.19% in pre market trading at $2.06. Solar stocks may continue their rally from yesterday following reports of stronger demand.According to Digitimes, solar firms are also looking at increasing their prices some due to the higher demand. JASO trades 4.1 million shares a day on average and has a market worth of 319.43 million.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE:BAC) is up 2.91% this morning at $7.08. Stock futures for the overall market are reacting positiviely this morning causing BAC stock to rise as well. BAC has had a nice run up since the middle of December when it went under $5 breifly. BAC trades 265 million shares a day on average and has a market cap of 69.63 billion.

Monster Beverage Corporation (NASDAQ:MNST) is up 3.08% in pre market trading at $95.25. MNST saw a jump in after hours yesterday as well following news of a 2-1 stock split. This stock split will occur on February 15 and each shareholder holding stock as of February 6 will receive an additional share. MNST trades just over 900 thousand shares a day and has a market cap of 8.05 billion.

Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ:DNDN) is up 1.81% in pre market trading at $14.61. DNDN has been trending higher for more than a week now after reporting strong Provenge sales in the fourth quarter. DNDN trades 7.7 million shares on average and the company is currently worth 2.14 billion.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is up 0.69% this morning at $425.47. Yesterday the Gadsden City Board of Education approved a three-year agreement with Apple that will see 420 iPads and other equipment in their schools. AAPL shares have been trading relatively flat the past couple of days after running up more than $40 a share earlier this month and last month. AAPL trades 14.3 million shares a day on average and has a market cap of 392.72 billion.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD) is down 9.42% in pre market trading at $29.80. News that Sears suppliers’ loans are to be halted today has sent the stock down this morning. SHLD has an average daily volume of 1.2 million shares and a market cap of 3.52 billion.

Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) is down 7.31% in pre market trading at $103.71. Late yesterday, Wynn Vice Chairman Kazuo Okada sued the company for access to see the company’s books. Traders reacted negatively to this news this morning after the stock saw a nice $3 rally yesterday. WYNN trades about 3 million shares daily and has a market cap of 13.89 billion.
