Traders at the NYSEThe broader markets are coming back with a case of the post-holiday blues. While domestic data surprised to the upside, concerns of the EU continue to ramp up. A series of interest rate cuts by the ECB, China and the UK have spooked traders as we head into the weekend. It shows that global economic conditions remain weak and are expected to remain there.

Wall Street signStocks are trading slightly lower across the board today as investors continue to feel uncertain about the debt situation in Europe. The market suffered one of its worst days of the year on Friday as each of the major indexes fell more than 2%.

On the economic data front, factory orders fell again in April marking the fourth straight month of declines. Orders fell 0.6% while economists were expecting a rise of 0.2%.

European markets saw thin trading today as U.K. stock markets are closed today and tomorrow on an extended bank holiday for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

China’s service sector continued to slow in May for the second straight month.

In mid-morning trading the Dow is down 21 points, the Nasdaq is down 1 point and the S&P 500 is down 3 points. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks are taking a beating today as investors fear a sharp economic slowdown due to today’s poor jobs report. The economy created only 69,000 jobs in May and the unemployment rate rose to 8.2%. The only thing doing well today is gold and silver as investors flood into perceived safe haven investments.

Today’s poor economic data has many analysts hoping for another round of QE (stimulus). Some analysts believe this will happen when the Fed meets in August or September, not at their June 20 meeting. The Fed has said repeatedly it would step in if the economy shows signs of slowing down.

The major indices are down 2% with the Dow down 222 points, the Nasdaq down 62 points and the S&P 500 dow 26 points. [Read more...]

investment newsInvestors will be glad to see May end. The never ending Euro saga coupled with lackluster data has the major indices retreating this morning. Overall is the losses hold, the Dow will be down over 6% for the month, the Nasdaq 7.5% and the S&P 6.6%.

Domestically the macro data is not helping the the markets at all. Jobless claims jumped higher, closing in on the 400k. The ADp report missed consensus of 150k, instead printing 133k. The anemic labor market with a housing market that refuses to recover is creating a sense that the recovery is faltering.
