The NYSE BullThe US markets are getting a breather from global concerns today as most European markets are closed for May Day. The ISM top-line beat is also helping boost equities with the S&P claiming the 1400 mark. However, the internals of the ISM report show some issues for manufacturing sector. But in typical market fashion, the details are not relevant today. All about pushing the market higher.

The big report that investors will be keyed on will be the unemployment numbers set to be released on Friday. Investors will not be the only ones looking at the report. Election cycle 2012 is in full swing so if the numbers are positive, expect Obama to tout them. If they disappoint in a big way, expect the Romney camp to pounce. Bad enough having European politicians jockeying for political position, now we get our own doing the same for next 5 months.

Stocks are trading higher this morning as jobless data showed the labor market continues to slowly recover. Initial claims came in at 351,000 and were unchanged from last week’s revised numbers. Most economists were expecting initial claims to rise to 354,000. The improving jobs market is seen as a win for President Obama as he begins to ramp up his reelection campaign. Voters have stressed in poll after poll that jobs are the most important issue to them in the November election.

Gas Prices On The Rise

Oil prices continue to rise today and are over $106/barrel and will soon be reflected at the gas pump. Some people contribute this rise to oil speculators which is somewhat true, but it is also the ongoing tensions between Iran and Western countries that are fueling this price increase. Analysts expect gas prices to rise to over $4 this spring and may even hit $5 a gallon by summer. One plus for consumers is the relatively mild winter has kept natural gas prices low. [Read more...]

Stocks are have lost some of their early gains but are still positive in mid morning trading. Investors continue to be hesitant in this market as Europe continues to dominate the headlines. Finance ministers across Europe are discussing the terms of Greece’s debt restructuring in order for the country to receive another bailout package. Research In Motion is taking a hit this morning as well following the appointment of a new CEO.

Let’s take a look at which stocks are posting strong gains this morning.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTIC) is up 12.98% this morning at $1.48. CTIC shares have jumped nearly $0.40 a share in the past few days. Late last week, Cell Therapeutics said it expects the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medical Products for Humna Use may issue an opinion on the marketing authorization application on Pixuvri in mid-February. CTIC has traded 5.2 million shares already today, four times its daily average. The company has a market cap of 271.94 million.

PetMed Express, Inc. (NASDAQ:PETS) is up 13.40% in early trading today at $12.70. PETS shares jumped today after the company posted a surprising fiscal third quarter profit increase. Revenue rose 12% in the fiscal third quarter as well. PETS has traded more than a million shares this morning, five times its average volume. The company has a market cap of 250.37 million.

Patriot Coal Corporation (NYSE:PCX) is up 9.12% today at $8.20. PCX has traded 5.9 million shares this morning and should have no problem eclipsing its daily average of 6.5 million shares. No recent news for PCX, but the stock had taken a hit in recent days due to falling natural gas prices. The company has a market cap of 753.46 million.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD) is up 9.82% this morning at $53.81. SHLD has traded 4.2 million shares so far today, three times its daily average. SHLD shares have jumped up more than $20 a share since the first of the year. Some analysts have attributed this jump to a classic short squeeze scenario and believe that the stock will come back down in price. The company has a market cap of 5.70 billion.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE:BAC) is up 3.52% today at $7.32. BAC has traded 145.7 million shares so far this morning and trades 270.3 million shares a day on average. BAC shares are up about $1.50 a share since the start of the new year. Earnings from last week were mixed with weak loan growth and trading results, but the company’s balance sheet continues to improve. The company has a market cap of 77.03 billion.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) is up 1.56% today at $6.52. AMD has traded 9.5 million shares so far today and trades 15.8 million shares a day on average. AMD shares are up $0.70 a share in the past five days. AMD is set to release earnings tomorrow. The company has a market cap of 4.54 billion.

Stocks are starting the day mixed as positive earnings have helped send the Dow Jones Industrials, but concerns over debt talks in Greece are weighing down the market. Microsoft and IBM both posted strong earnings after market close yesterday. Google shares have been getting hammered today and are down nearly 8% after their earnings missed expectations. Talks between Greece and its creditors continue as it appears they are nearing a deal which would see private bondholders take a 70% loss. Greece is running out of time and hopes to have an agreement in place by Monday in order to get another aid package before its bond repayments in March. As of 10:30 am EST the Dow is up 64 points while the Nasdaq and S&P are both down 2 points.

Insmed, Inc. (NASDAQ:INSM) is up 30.26% in early trading today at $4.97. INSM is up on heavy volume after the FDA lifted the clinical hold on its drug Arkiface. The stock has traded 2.1 million shares so far this morning, way above its daily average of 82 thousand shares. The company has a current market cap of 122.68 million.

Ku6 Media Co., Ltd (NASDAQ:KUTV) is up 10.72% today at $2.3030. KUTV is bouncing back today after dipping the previous two trading sessions. On Jan. 17, Ku6 announced a partnership with Youtube which sent shares up from around $1.50 to over $4 in one day. The stock then dipped the next two days before bouncing back this morning. KUTV has traded 757 thousand shares already today, more than five times its daily average. The company has a market cap of 114.95 million.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD) is up 9.115 this morning at $47.22. SHLD is up on above average volume today with 1.6 million shares traded. The stock typically trades 1.5 million shares a day. SHLD shares are up today on speculation that majority investor Eddie Lampert will take the company private. The company has a market cap of 5.09 billion.

Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:OREX) is up 10% in early trading at $2.31. OREX has traded 882 thousand shares today, already double its daily average. OREX shares are up more than $0.60 a share since the start of the new year. No recent news for the company, but they do have an obesity drug in the pipeline. The company has a market cap of 109.87 million.

Doral Financial Corporation (NYSE:DRL) is up 8.46% today at $1.41. DRL has traded 700 thousand shares today and trades 925 thousand shares a day on average. DRL announced its most recent quarterly results yesterday and saw net interest income increase more than $1 million from the previous year’s quarter. The company has a market cap of 182.03 million.

Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWKS) is up 8.42% this morning at $20.85. SWKS shares are up today after reported earnings beat estimates. The company reported revenue of $394 million, beating analysts estimates of $390 million. Skyworks saw sales jump 17% compared to the same quarter a year ago. SWKS has traded 5.7 million shares so far today, up from its average of 5.2 million shares. The company has a market cap of 3.92 billion.

Stock Futures Strong After Successful Bond Auctions. Stocks to Watch: JASO, BAC, MNST, DNDN, AAPL, SHLD, WYNN

US stock futures were following Europe’s lead higher this morning after Spain and Italy’s successful bond auctions. Traders were also waiting for a string of economic reports and are watching the ECB taking place this morning in Europe. Dow futures are currently up 50 points to 12,438. Nasdaq 100 futures are adding 15 points to 2,382.S&P 500 futures are rounding out the gains adding over 7 points to 1,296.

Europe is back in focus this morning and for once it gives a few pieces of good news. The banking heavy Stoxx 600 Index is up .82% after the successful bond auctions in Spain and Italy. The drop in borrowing costs helped take the pressure off the regions hard-hit banking sector.

Thursday’s economic data calendar is also stacked. At 8:30am the weekly jobless claims report releases and November inventory numbers will be released at 10am. Investors are hoping the jobless numbers continue to show a strengthening labor market.

Corporate news should bring PVH Corp. into focus. The company raised its outlook overnight on the strength of brand performance, specially Calvin Klein. Shares of Chevron are dropping in pre-market trading after the company warned of weakness in downstream business areas.

Overnight trading in Asia was to the downside as investors worried about the upcoming bond auctions in the EU. Inflationary numbers out of China showed a slight easing, but food inflation continues to run rampant. This may give officials there the leverage they need to ease monetary policy to keep Chinese growth strong and prevent a hard-landing.

Commodities, especially precious metals,continue their broad-based rally in 2012. Gold prices are up another percent this morning to $1657 per ounce. Nymex crude oil futures are also up, adding $1.29 to $102 per barrel.

JA Solar Holdings, Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ:JASO) is up 6.19% in pre market trading at $2.06. Solar stocks may continue their rally from yesterday following reports of stronger demand.According to Digitimes, solar firms are also looking at increasing their prices some due to the higher demand. JASO trades 4.1 million shares a day on average and has a market worth of 319.43 million.

Bank of America Corporation (NYSE:BAC) is up 2.91% this morning at $7.08. Stock futures for the overall market are reacting positiviely this morning causing BAC stock to rise as well. BAC has had a nice run up since the middle of December when it went under $5 breifly. BAC trades 265 million shares a day on average and has a market cap of 69.63 billion.

Monster Beverage Corporation (NASDAQ:MNST) is up 3.08% in pre market trading at $95.25. MNST saw a jump in after hours yesterday as well following news of a 2-1 stock split. This stock split will occur on February 15 and each shareholder holding stock as of February 6 will receive an additional share. MNST trades just over 900 thousand shares a day and has a market cap of 8.05 billion.

Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ:DNDN) is up 1.81% in pre market trading at $14.61. DNDN has been trending higher for more than a week now after reporting strong Provenge sales in the fourth quarter. DNDN trades 7.7 million shares on average and the company is currently worth 2.14 billion.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is up 0.69% this morning at $425.47. Yesterday the Gadsden City Board of Education approved a three-year agreement with Apple that will see 420 iPads and other equipment in their schools. AAPL shares have been trading relatively flat the past couple of days after running up more than $40 a share earlier this month and last month. AAPL trades 14.3 million shares a day on average and has a market cap of 392.72 billion.

Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:SHLD) is down 9.42% in pre market trading at $29.80. News that Sears suppliers’ loans are to be halted today has sent the stock down this morning. SHLD has an average daily volume of 1.2 million shares and a market cap of 3.52 billion.

Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) is down 7.31% in pre market trading at $103.71. Late yesterday, Wynn Vice Chairman Kazuo Okada sued the company for access to see the company’s books. Traders reacted negatively to this news this morning after the stock saw a nice $3 rally yesterday. WYNN trades about 3 million shares daily and has a market cap of 13.89 billion.
