A recent report has EU countries considering the June payment of bailout funds due to the political turmoil. Plus news out of Spain has the government set to possibly nationalize one of their leading banks.

Wall StreetThe verdict is in. Investors are not liking the jobs report. The major indexes are all at or near session lows as the unemployment report missed expectations by a wide margin. On positive to come from it is the fact that oil prices are diving under $100 per barrel. If that trend can last it could give a boost to consumers by removing some of the pain at the pump.

Outside of the lackluster domestic numbers, two elections will be closely watched this weekend. The major one is the French presidential election with Sarkozy seemingly heading for defeat. The other is Greek parliamentary elections. Both could have consequences for the EU and ECB rescue pacts that have already been drawn up.

Currently the Dow is off 16, the Nasdaq is down 60 and the S&P is off 22. [Read more...]

Wall Street signEarnings helped push stocks higher so far today even as economic data from the housing industry disappoints. European stocks also bounced today after hitting a 3-month low yesterday. Investors felt more confident today as the Netherlands had a successful $2.6 billion bond auction today even as their government collapsed on Monday.

Home prices dropped for the sixth straight month in February. New home sales also took a hit, falling more than 7% to a 328,000 unit rate in March.

All eyes will be on Apple this afternoon as they release earnings right after market close. Apple stock is currently trading down 2% at around $560 a share.

The Dow is currently up 100 points this morning, the Nasdaq is down 2 points and the S&P 500 is up 6 points. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks have given up some of their early gains and the Nasdaq has turned negative due to a poor housing report. Homebuilder sentiment fell to its lowest level since January. Sentiment was on the rebound as warmer temperatures and an improving economy saw more buyers looking to begin construction.

The Nasdaq has turned negative this morning as powerhouse tech stocks like Apple and Google fell 2%.

In mid-morning trading the Dow is up 79 points, the Nasdaq is down 17 points and the S&P 500 is up about a point. [Read more...]

Afternoon Movers: BONT, TEAR, FFN, SQNM, SCEI, ZGNX

Investors at the NYSEThe market is continuing its rally this afternoon and is near its high of the day. Stocks are rallying as investors are optimistic that Greece get past a key hurdle with its private creditors. Commodities are also rallying alongside the market today with gold up about $19 at $1,702.80 and oil is up $0.86 at $107. The Dow is up 88 points, the Nasdaq is 38 points and the S&P 500 is up 15 points.

The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:BONT) is up 18.19% today at $8.15. BONT has traded 1.9 million shares this afternoon, 9 times its average volume. BONT shares are rising for the second straight day today and is up about $3. The company has a market cap of 165.09 million. [Read more...]
