Stock Futures Edge Lower on Data. Stocks to Watch: AMPE, XOMA, CLNT, MNKD, LDK, SIRI, CHK

Stock FuturesWith earnings season still going full force, investors get a chance to eye more domestic macro data ahead of Friday’s all important unemployment gauge. One positive sign on the company level front is Microsoft investment of $300 million into Barnes and Noble’s digital reader program. That has sent shares on Barnes and Noble soaring in pre-market. Dow futures are currently down 21 points. The Nasdaq and S&P are both trading modestly lower, down 10.25 and 3 points respectively.

Consumer spending rose in line with expectations with growth coming in at .3%. Personal income rose by .4% fueled in part by an increase in government payments. Other economic data set for release today includes the Chicago purchasing managers index. THis will be released at 9:45am EST

Europe continues to be an ongoing concern as data out of Spain showed them slipping back into recession. With a near 25% unemployment rate, this news is probably not shocking to anyone. The S&P also went on a downgrade spree on European banks. THis has the major markets of the EU edging lower in late trading.

This week will also be a busy one for earnings. 126 S&P 500 companies will report throughout the week. So far, 76% of companies have met or exceeded expectations. That includes giants like Apple and Amazon.

In commodities, both oil and gold seem to be tracking the broader market slightly lower. Nymex crude future are down slightly but still maintaining their position well above the $100 per barrel mark. Gold price futures are currently down $5.10 to $1,659.70 per ounce. [Read more...]

Wall Street signStocks are trimming their early morning gains after two data sets came out pointing to a struggling recovery. First up was the Case Shiller Home Price Index which fell to a 9 year low. So much for a housing recovery.

Next up was consumer confidence numbers. May come as a shock to some, but rising gas prices do have a way of crimping consumers. The index fell to 70.6. Both numbers show that while we may be recovering, the economic doldrums are still there for sizable slice of the populace are mired in poor economic conditions.

What is probably needed at this point is a fresh round of stimulus spending. ut the current political climate will prevent that. This is where the Fed will step in with some sort of new monetary easing policy, be it QE3 or some new name. Regardless, the recovery is halting at best based of the constant flow of data coming in. Economists were expecting a reading of 76. Consumer prices index increased 0.4% last month due to increased gas prices. Taking a quick look at the market shows the Dow up 7 points, the Nasdaq up 1 point and the S&P 500 up 1 point.

Amarin Corporation (NASDAQ:AMRN) is up 12.12% this morning at $10.00. AMRN has traded 5.7 million shares so far today, well above its daily average of 3.1 million shares. Amarin shares have been climbing the past couple of days on rumors of patent progress for its heart drug candidate AMR-101. There have also been rumors of a possible takeover. Market Recovering Slightly In Midday Trading: QRM, BCRX, XOMA, FOSL, CIS, INFY, STP, PMC

Stocks are recovering in midday trading with the Nasdaq turning positive now. The jobs numbers did hurt the market for a little while but most economists and investors expected an uptick in jobless claims as stores get rid of holiday workers. Things in Europe seem to be looking better after successful auctions in Spain and Italy. New government leaderships in Italy and Spain have helped give investors confidence overseas. The Dow is down just 13 points right now, the Nasdaq is up 5 points and the S&P is slightly positive.

Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (AMEX:QRM) is up 19.61% in midday trading at $3.05. QRM has traded 863 thousand shares today after the company reported strong summer program drill results at its Strange Lake property. QRM shares are up more than $0.80 a share since late December. Quest Rare Minerals has a market cap of 185.81 million.

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:BCRX) is up 13.15% today at $2.84. BCRX has traded 681 thousand shares today, nearly 6 times its daily average. BCRX shares have been trending higher today after announcing positive results from its ongoing BCX4208 Phase 2B study in patients with gout. The company has a market cap of 127.09 million.

XOMA Corporation (NASDAQ:XOMA) is up 14.02% in midday trading at $1.7901. XOMA has traded double its average volume with 455 thousand shares. Fossil announced in an 8-K yesterday they entered into a purchase agreement with Skagen Designs, Ltd. The company has a market cap of 5.37 billion.

Camelot Information Systems (NYSE:CIS) is down 11.47% in midday trading at $2.1690. CIS has traded 683 thousand shares today, 100 thousand shares more than its daily average. CIS has been getting hit by multiple class action lawsuits accusing the company of issuing materially false and misleading statements about the company’s business. The company has a market cap of 92.61 million.

Infosys Limited (NASDAQ:INFY) is down 9.41% today at $51.51. INFY shares are falling today after fourth quarter guidance misses expectations. INFY is seeing massive selling pressure today with 5.1 million shares traded, 4 times its daily average volume. The company has a market cap of 29.27 billion.
