Stock Futures Pull Back on Chinese Data. Stocks to Watch

Wall Street signIf investors were looking for a continuation of winning sessions, the futures are not helping matters. Chinese data coupled with bank earnings are helping drive the market lower in pre-market trading. Dow futures are down 63 points to 12,887. Nasdaq and S&P futures are also negative, down 12 and 7 respectively.

GDP numbers out of China overnight saw the country growing at a 8.1% pace. This was below the consensus expectation of 8.3%. This marked the slowest pace in growth in 11 quarters for the country.

The numbers out of China had a cascading effect on European markets. The EU also had to digest the news that Spain sharply increased its borrowing from the ECB in March.

In earnings news, the banking sector kicked it off this morning with beats. Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) reported better than expected earnings. While JPMorgan and Chase (NYSE:JPM) saw profits decline, it was not as bad as predicted by many analysts. This was due in part to their lending arm. [Read more...]

NYSE Stocks Trading Higher Today: SD, MWW, HL, FRO, SPN, CIS, MUX

The NYSE BullStocks are rebounding heading into midday led by energy stocks. Gains are being limited today by disappointing data from the housing sector. Home sales fell 1.6% last month to 313,000, analysts were expecting to see sales come in at 325,000. The average price of a home rose 8.3% in February to $233,700, the highest in about 8 months.

The stock market has been in decline much of the week as investors voice their concerns over a slowdown in China and the euro zone’s weak economy.

The major stock indices have turned mostly positive in the past hour with the Dow up 31 points, the Nasdaq still in the red by 5 points and the S&P 500 has gained 2 points. [Read more...]

The market continues to trade mixed in midday trading. A positive jobs report sent stocks slightly higher this morning, but soon retreated after mixed earnings and Ben Bernanke’s remarks. Ben Bernanke told law makers earlier today that the economic recovery is “frustratingly slow.” He also urged law makers not to cut spending in policies that could help strengthen the economy. The Dow is down 18 points, the Nasdaq is up 7 points and the S&P is up 1 point.

Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ:ZNGA) is up 15.19% today at $12.21. ZNGA is continuing its rally over the past week or so as Facebook’s IPO filing is sending numerous companies in that sector up. Zynga’s success is directly tied into Facebook’s success. ZNGA is up on extremely large volume with nearly 40 million shares traded. The stock trades 10 million shares a day on average. The company has a market cap of 8.50 billion.

Cemex, S.A.B. (NYSE:CX) is up 6.75% in midday trading at $7.58. CX has traded 31.8 million shares so far today, more than double its daily average. CX shares are up today after the company announced fourth quarter results. CX saw consolidated net sales increase by 6% in the fourth quarter to $3.7 billion and increased 8 for the full year. The company has a market cap of 7.93 billion.

Sandridge Energy Inc. (NYSE:SD) is down 10.22% today at $7.03. SD has traded 50.1 million shares today, five times its daily average. SD was downgraded today by multiple analysts. Tudor Picering downgraded the stock to hold from accumulate and Howard Weil downgraded to market perform from market outperform. Sandridge also announced the purchase of Dynamic Offshore for $1.27 billion yesterday. The company has a market cap of 2.82 billion.

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) is up 5.88% in after hours trading at $63.11. QCOM shares jump as earnings beat estimates and the company raises its outlook. Earnings increased 20% in the fourth quarter and the company expects first quarter EPS to be between $0.91-$0.97. Analysts were expecting $0.89. The company has a market cap of 100.12 billion.

JDS Uniphase Corporation (NASDAQ:JDSU) is up 4.72% in after hours trading at $13.70. JDS Uniphase posted a loss in its fiscal second quarter results but their results beat analyst expectations. Excluding one-time items JDS Uniphase would have earned $0.15 a share. Analysts were expecting $0.10 a share. The company has a market cap of 3.01 billion.

Sandridge Energy Inc. (NYSE:SD) is down 11.75% in after hours at $6.91. SD shares are down right now following news that Sandridge will buy Dynamic Offshore for $1.28 billion. The deal will be $680 million in cash and 74 million in Sandridge stock. The company has a market cap of 3.13 billion.

Shutterfly, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFLY) is down 12.50% in after hours trading at $21.98. SFLY shares are falling as initial reactions from investors on its fourth quarter results are negative. Shutterfly reported adjusted net income of $1.48 per share, beating estimates of $0.82. The company is expecting between $0.31 to $0.43 for the first quarter. Analysts’ estimates for the first quarter are between $0.32 and $0.52. The company has a market cap of 870.94 million.
