After Hours Report for April 16

NasdaqDefinitely a mixed bag on Wall Street today. The Dow jumped back into positive territory while Apple sent the Nasdaq into the red. Economic data also gave investors a mixed bag as the NY manufacturing index cooled and the housing issue continues to haunt the street. Add in some storm clouds building in Europe and to say we might me in a bit of limbo would be an understatement.

The big news internationally will be Argentina’s nationalization of YPF. That is sure to cause consternation in Spain which has already released a statement saying they are weighing their options (diplo-speak for we ain’t happy). Domestically tech darlings Apple and Google seem to have lost their upward momentum with Apple shares dropping 4% today.

Wall Street signThe bulls are back in town. Nothing like an earnings beat to shake off the pessimism. At least for the moment. Alcoa earnings beat shows that the world may finally be entering into a sustainable recovery. It should be noted that the volume is light today, so the rally lacks real conviction. More is needed to show that the market really wants to push higher.

Across the pond, investor sentiment was lifted when it was reported that the ECB could resume its bond purchasing program. Yields on Spanish and Italian debt declined helping to boot the overall market.

VeriFone announced their fourth quarter earnings yesterday. The company saw revenue jump nearly 49%. The stock is down today though after VeriFone said it expected first quarter profit of $0.50-$0.52 per share. Analysts were expecting $0.53 per share. Verifone has a market cap of 3.99 billion.

Hecla Mining Co. (NYSE:HL) is down 5.41% today at $5.42. HL has traded 6.9 million shares so far today and trades 8.4 million shares a day on average. HL stock fell today after news of an incident at an Idaho mine. All of their workers are safe after a rock burst at the mine. The company has a market cap of 1.51 billion.

Penn Virginia Corporation (NYSE:PVA) is down 7.01% today at $4.51. PVA has traded 850 thousand shares so far today and trades 1.2 million shares a day on average. PVA stock has been trending downward since Monday and is down about $1.50 since then. Penn Virginia has a market cap of 207.52 million.

Diamond Foods is down today after the company announced it will delay filing its first-quarter results due to an ongoing investigation by its audit committee into the accounting for its walnut payments. The company has a market cap of 698.73 million.

Rosetta Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROSE) is down 9.17% this morning at $45.92. ROSE has traded 833 thousand shares so far today and trades about 1 million shares a day on average. Rosetta is down today after disappointing well results. Rosetta Resources has a market cap of 2.39 billion.
