Wall Street signStocks are taking a beating today as investors fear a sharp economic slowdown due to today’s poor jobs report. The economy created only 69,000 jobs in May and the unemployment rate rose to 8.2%. The only thing doing well today is gold and silver as investors flood into perceived safe haven investments.

Today’s poor economic data has many analysts hoping for another round of QE (stimulus). Some analysts believe this will happen when the Fed meets in August or September, not at their June 20 meeting. The Fed has said repeatedly it would step in if the economy shows signs of slowing down.

The major indices are down 2% with the Dow down 222 points, the Nasdaq down 62 points and the S&P 500 dow 26 points. [Read more...]

Stock Futures Edge Higher As Traders Wait For Manufacturing Data. Stocks to Watch: PLXT, IPSU, IDTI, SIRI, VECO, PFCB, YGE

Stock FuturesInvestors are cautiously waiting the ISM numbers this morning as they gear up for Friday’s NFP numbers. Essentially the softer the number could be a boost for equities because they will expect the Fed to ride to the rescue via QE3 or another type of stimulus. Currently Dow futures are up 11 points. The Nasdaq and S&P are essentially flat, both up fractionally.

One piece of good news for investors is the fact that most of Europe And Asia is closed today outside of London in observance of May Day. This is making for a quiet trading environment on the global markets.

Consensus expectations for the ISM data slated for release today is for a slight slip to 53.3 from 53.4. Economic data has been disappointing as of late so any big miss could send stocks south. It would also boost the confidence of investors that believe the Fed will ride to the rescue. The only problem is the next FOMC meeting is 6 weeks away.

Earnings season will continue to give the market direction with major companies still to report. Pfizer reported this morning and was a mixed bag. The main concern was that the blue-chip drugmaker slashed its 2012 financial outlook.

Commodities are a mixed bag this morning. Oil prices are slipping slightly, with Nymex crude futures down 7 cents to $104.80. Gold prices are enjoying a bit of a rally on renewed QE hopes. Right now gold futures are up $7.10 to $1671.30. [Read more...]

After Hours Trading Report for Apr. 30

Wall StreetInvestors have to be glad April is over. Logging losses for the month, April turned out to be the worst month of 2012 so far. News out of the Europe continues to weigh on investors as Spain entered back into recession. The looming election in France is sure to cause levels of consternation to spike as we near May 6. The outcome of that election could push the Euro to the brink if Hollande carries through on his promises on pushing back against austerity.

Domestically the economic data pointed towards a mixed bag. The Chicago PMI cratered, while consumer spending held up, but still dipped from February. Investors will be watching for the NFP report due on Friday. Estimates are already being slashed on the number of jobs created.

The Dow ended the down 15. The Nasdaq and S&P also ended down, dropping 23 and 5 points respectively. [Read more...]

Wall StreetYingli Green Energy Holding (NYSE:YGE) is up 16.54% this afternoon at $4.45. YGE has traded 9.8 million shares so far today, more than double its daily average. YGE shares are popping this afternoon after a 3.59% tariff for its solar modules. Now a tariff isn’t usually good news, but in this case it is at least today. Chinese solar companies have been expecting a tariff since December, they just never knew how much it would be. The company has a market cap of 679.44 million.

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE:STP) is up 15.65% today at $3.62. STP saw a massive spike this afternoon in share price and volume on news that U.S. set low tariffs on solar panels from Chinese solar companies. Traders at the NYSEStocks continue to trade flat at midday. No big news has investors in a h wait and see mode. Investors have their eye set on a fed meeting later this week where current monetary policy will be discussed. At noon the Dow is up 7 points, the Nasdaq is down 11 points and the S&P 500 is down 3 points.

Trina Solar Limited (NYSE:TSL) is down 4.92% in midday trading at $6.95. TSL has traded 1.5 million shares so far today and trades 4.4 million shares a day on average. Trina Solar is back to levels it started the year at. The stock hit a high of $11 back in mid February. The company has a market cap of 490.39 million.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Company (NYSE:YGE) is down 5.79% today at $3.58. YGE is trading light volume today with 1.1 million shares traded. The stock trades 4.7 million shares a day on average. Stocks Finish Flat and After Hours Movers

Image of the NasdaqStocks finished mostly flat today as investors took the opportunity to lock in some profits following news of a deal for Greece’s second bailout package. EU finance ministers finished a 130 billion euro for Greece. Private bondholders agreed to take a greater loss and the government in Greece agreed to deeper cuts. There is a lot of skepticism going around though as investors wonder how long before Greece is a problem again.

Oil prices continue to rise as well which can have even greater implications such as slowing down the U.S. economic recovery. Oil closed at $105.50 a barrel today as investors eye developments in Iran.

In after hours trading, Dell and Chesapeake Energy are in the spotlight after releasing earnings. [Read more...]

SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) is up 10.96% in after hours trading at $8.30. SPWR announced fourth quarter earnings after the market close today. SunPower reported a net loss of $83.1 million or $0.84 per share. In the same period last year, the company reported net income of $152.3 million or $1.44 per share. The company has a market cap of 749.32 million.

Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMAT) is up 4.69% in after hours trading at $13.21. AMAT shares are up this afternoon following the company’s quarterly results. Stocks Heading Up In Early Trading: KUTV, CNVO, STP, YGE, DNN, USU

The stock market is well into positive territory this morning as news out of China pushed stocks to open higher this morning. China’s economy grew a little bit more than expected at 8.9%. Many analysts were expecting closer to 8.7%. However, China’s economy grew at the slowest pace in more than two years. Banking stocks are mixed this morning with Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE:WFC) up about 2% after its quarterly results beat expectations. Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) on the other hand is down 5.43% after reporting an 11% profit drop in the most recent quarter.

It appears investors have largely ignored the recent slew of downgrades in Europe as the China GDP news took center stage today. As of 10:22 am EST the Dow is up 114 points, the Nasdaq is up 24 points and the S&P is up 10 points.

Let’s take a look at a few more stocks that are following the overall market higher.

Ku6 Media Co., Ltd (NASDAQ:KUTV) is up 182% this morning at $4.00. KUTV is up on extremely heavy volume today with over a million shares traded, above its daily average of 28 thousand shares. KUTV shares are up today after entering into a definitive agreement with YouTube allowing Ku6’s international users to view videos from China through a new channel operated by YouTube. The company has a market cap of 179.20 million.

Convio, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNVO) is up 47.95% today at $15.89. CNVO has traded 5 million shares today, way above its daily average of around 40 thousand shares. CNVO shares jumped this morning after Blackbaud agreed to acquire the company for $275 million. The company has a market cap of 291.99 million.

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE:STP) is up 11.39% in early trading at $3.30. STP has traded 1.6 million shares so far today and trades 3.4 million shares a day on average. STP and the solar sector has been on a tear the past week after news that solar panel prices were stabilizing and an increase in demand. The company has a market cap of 594.02 million.

Yingli Green Energy Holding (NYSE:YGE) is up 12.13% this morning at $5.27. YGE is trading above average volume today with 3 million shares traded. The stock trades 3.2 million shares a day on average. YGE has seen a rally over the past week or so for the same reason as Suntech Power Holdings. The company has a market cap of 821.03 million.

Dension Mines Corp. (AMEX:DNN) is up 9.68% in early trading at $1.73. DNN has traded 1.4 million shares so far today, 400 thousand more shares than its daily average. Yesterday, the company outlined its 2012 operating plans and released final production and sales volume.

USEC Inc. (NYSE:USU) is up 15.04% this morning at $1.53. USU has traded 1.9 million shares in early trading and trades 2 million shares a day on average. On Friday, USEC announced it continues to work on the American Centrifuge project. The company has a market cap of 196.28 million.
